This week in class we will be role playing. Your groups have been divided and each group will be presenting a role play on the following subject and case scenario:
The subject is Euthanasia
The Case Scenariou is in the labor and delivery lounge. The labor and delivery staff just delivered an anacephalic infant.
The role play must include:
1. A doctor and nurse discussing euthanasia and in corporating the terms ethical and/or moral dilemma, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and patient’s rights in the short script.
2. The team script is to be at least 3 to 5 minutes long and centered around euthanasia. A pro and a con must be represented and three resources used.
Be prepared next week for a 25 question combination short answer/multiple choice test defining autonomy, surrogate autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, confidentiality, consent, patient rights, medical utility, euthanasia, defamation, documentation fraud, ethical dilemma, moral dilemma, ethical principles, and justice.
Deb, only once have I been on the periphery of such a delivery, and it generated much discussion and strong feelings and disagreements about the approach to take with the infant and with the family. This is an excellent topic for an ethics class. Barbara

DeleteDeb,
ReplyDeleteI was a pregnant student nurse when a woman delivered a full term baby boy. This was many years ago but I still remember the comments and actions of many people. My instructor would not let me leave even when the on duty nurse realized that the baby had died. She was concerned with the rest of my pregnancy. There was a change in nursing staff and the nurse present after the delivery was in a hurry and wanted the mother to give up the deaceased infant. She wanted to hold it. It did not seem right to rush a woman who would never hold her child again after that time.
Wow. Thank you for your comments...an experience that had an impact on you and you will never forget. I was a student when I had an experience with a full-term anacephalic baby boy. The mother did not want to see the baby. The baby was wrapped in a blanket and placed in a dark room. The nurse wanted me sit with him until he died but not to touch him or make any noise...I did not follow orders. It was an intense experience. My instructor was told where I was and "rescued" me. She was not to happy with the staff.
